@fps4czx5cuhpx : "They" is definitely an unclear pronoun reference and appears in most English translations of this story. It could refer to either the Midianites or the brothers. But the rest of the narrative supports the idea that the brothers sold him, regardless of who actually pulled Joseph up from the pit. Perhaps the sale was negotiated over lunch shared with the traders as they passed by... not a huge stretch of the imagination.

TLC seems to get out of order. She talks about an altar (referred only as a pillar in NKJV) Jacob erects in Bethel and then says “Then something weird happens” referring to God changing Jacob’s name, again, but this happens BEFORE the pillar at Bethel. Weird.

@fps4czx5cuhpx : Appears that the Midianites actually pulled Joseph from the pit while the brothers were deliberating and sold him to the Ishmaelites. Then Reuben was the first brother to come back to the pit and found Joseph was gone. Thoughts on this? Midianites actually sold Joseph before the brothers could do so? Or is this just translated clumsily in the ESV?

As Tara said and I had always been taught, “Joseph’s brothers sold him to the Ishmaelites”, but I read in ESV Bible, while the brothers sat down to eat and decided they would sell their brother, “Then Midianite traders passed by. And they [the Midianites] drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt. When Reuben returned to the pit [from eating with his brothers] and saw that Joseph was not in the pit....”
