Absalom wanted to avenge his sister. If David had also shown Absalom love instead of complete rejection, hatred and bitterness would not have grown. This story actually reminds me of when pastors do not deal with what is happening in their home. 1 Timothy 3:4 talks about leaders managing their family well and their children obeying them. When things go awry, we must stop and look at ourselves.

I don't believe that Absalom was initially desiring to take down his father, David. We read in Samuel 13 21 that King David heard of what Amnon did and yet never punished Amnon. Absalom did what he felt his dad should have done, but didn't. Once brought back, his dad never spent time with him. Absalom was rejected and expressed that in 2 Samuel 14:32. David could have prevented what was to come by reacting to Amnon as a father and king should have.
